“Mana Gardening: Empower Yourself and Live a Better Life” by Michelle Shine, Ph.D., and Keti Kamalani

Two esteemed scientists residing in a breathtaking location faced difficulties finding happiness. In their quest for genuine happiness, they stumbled upon an ancient Hawaiian concept known as Mana Gardening. This concept revolves around harnessing the inner wisdom that resides within oneself. They named this approach Mana Gardening, inspired by the Hawaiian belief in Mana, representing the spiritual energy or consciousness in everything.

This book introduces Mana Gardening as a unique and calming method. It empowers readers to understand desires, needs, and the best path forward. Through Keti Kamalani and Michelle Shine’s enlightening experiences, they discover a fresh approach to establishing a direct connection with one’s higher self, heart, and soul.

Mana Gardening is a simple yet powerful technique rooted in cognitive-behavioral principles. It offers a straightforward path to relaxation, personal wisdom, enhanced intuition, improved relationships, a deeper spiritual connection, and genuine happiness in your daily life. Keti Kamalani and Michelle Shine, Ph.D., encourage readers to get behind the burdens of past problems, pain, trauma, unhealthy habits, and old grudges and start living a more fulfilling life.

Affirmative cognitive behavior therapy

Affirmative cognitive behavior therapy is a well-researched treatment that has proven effective for many mental health and relationship issues. People identifying as sexual or gender minorities often experience stressors related to their sexual orientation, gender identity, and how these aspects intersect with their other identities. Because of this, there is a strong demand for resources that offer evidence-based practices tailored explicitly for sexual and gender minorities. However, only a limited number of studies have examined the use of this therapy with this particular population.

Huna

Huna, meaning “secret” in Hawaiian, represents ancient knowledge that allows individuals to connect with their inner wisdom. By recognizing and applying the core principles of Huna, people aim to achieve healing and harmony through the power of the mind. This spiritual practice integrates the mind, body, and spirit, offering an opportunity to develop inner knowing and enhance natural psychic abilities.

Huna and Healing

Huna, also known as ho’omana, taught ancient Hawaiians how to tap into their life-force energy, work with it, and recognize their connection to the environment and others. Living in harmony, or being pono, was a way of life for them, not just something they occasionally expected when everything fell into place.

Hawaiians learned from Huna how to work with the unconscious mind, called unihipili, to release stress and suppressed emotions. Whenever negative emotions or distressing memories arose, Hawaiians understood it as a signal to realign and let go of those emotions or memories. They didn’t bury those feelings. They cope with them or try to numb them. Instead, they took action through rituals or processes like ho’oponopono to heal, gain insights from their experiences, and release those emotions, allowing them to return to balance and harmony.

Before the arrival of missionaries in Hawaii, the emphasis on remaining pono and spiritually aligned helped keep diseases at bay. Hawaiians, even those without formal training, had the tools to recognize initial signs of imbalance in any area of their lives and take action to restore harmony.

Mana

A critical principle of Huna is called Mana. Mana is a crucial concept in Hawaiian beliefs and how their society functions. It is often described as supernatural or divine power, but we can think of it as spiritual energy and the life force that exists everywhere. Respecting, increasing, and safeguarding this powerful energy led to many rules and customs in Hawaiian society. Anything with strong Mana was considered unique, holy, and set apart. The term “kapu” describes something sacred and can also mean law in the Hawaiian context. So, it signifies both a spiritual and legal significance.
